“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” ― George R.R. Martin
If I don’t talk first about books as a recipe for personal Development, is like giving the Nigerian Jollof-Rice Recipe without Pepper.

My Earliest encounter with books and reading would be from my Primary School, My Parents got us different kinds of books and I have always loved them. I had bedtime storybooks, Kid’s encyclopedias, Bible stories, and lots more. It was unknown to me what this was doing to me in my subconscious. In hindsight, the times I read those books were some of my best times as a little child. In a family of scholars, could I have escaped that?
Fast forward to Senior Secondary school, I read a few books on Personal development, it did not really feel like I was doing so much of a profitable activity. Those times, I read books not just cause I loved to do so. I realized I read non-fictional books because it was the serious and seemingly visionary thing to do. I had seen my seniors read Ben Carson’s “Think Big“, “Gifted Hands“ etc. I acquired knowledge but I did not apply them in the right places or let’s say I did not acquire them well enough to be applied effectively.
In my first year as an Undergraduate, I encountered our Chaplain, Pastor Kayode Martins, He made us read books, It initially felt like a burden, but I took it seriously and I read most of his recommended books. I experienced a quantum leap in my reading life, I became better not only at reading but choosing the right books, reading faster and more effectively. I read amazing books. Thought Provoking, Life-changing books.
I’m in a school where our chancellor is an avid reader and writer. He does not just share wisdom via his books. His Life is a constant reminder that all that he teaches us are true, real, and life-applicable.
Sometimes you don’t intentionally apply books to life issues, you naturally act out from who you have become and the knowledge you have acquired. It flows from your subconscious so effortlessly that you almost can not trace it to a book anymore. I guess Walt Disney was right when he said “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”
I have shared this story as a base for my next post. Next time, I’ll be sharing some reading misconceptions and ways to read books effectively.
Please share these with your friends and family.
